Jon Souza AKA Phes is a Brazilian-American artist from Harlem, NYC. He is a visual artist, emcee, producer, and educator. Born and raised in New York, he was inspired by Hip Hop from an early age and started writing graffiti and rhymes in the early 90’s. Phes’ work focuses on using art and creativity as a medium for education, social justice, conflict resolution and community building.
Phes first started as a graffiti writer in the early 90’s. He has now painted walls and mural projects around the country as well as in Peru, Brazil, Amsterdam, Columbia and France. He is currently an artist-in-residence at the Andrew Freedman Home in the Bronx and has worked as a Lead Artist for the NYC Mural Arts Project. Recently, Phes worked as a Hip Hop Cultural Ambassador in Peru for the Next Level Program.
Phes started making music at an early age. He started piano lessons at 8 years old, guitar at 12 years old, and eventually went on to graduate with a BA degree in music from Wesleyan University. He now has experience as an emcee, producer, audio engineer and DJ. In 2014, one of his songs was used for the soundtrack of the Spike Lee film “Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus”. Phes’ solo album “NOIZ” was released in 2018 and can be found on all major music streaming platforms. He recently released “Moorenos Asiaticos” in collaboration with Mighty Kalipssus from Medellin Colombia. His music can be found on all streaming platforms.
